Not only is hemp the cannabis cousin of marijuana (historically known as the fun loving, care-free spirit in the family) hemp has some very endearing, if not down right useful, characteristics of its own (see below)…and while it costs a bit more to produce products using hemp the benefits are well worth it…
As an alternative to deforestation — Hemp can be processed into paper products of excellent strength and quality, easing some of the unsustainable burden placed on our forests. An acre of hemp actually produces more than four times as much pulp for paper making than an acre of trees when figured on an annual basis. Additionally hemp requires no bleach in processing, due to its low lignin content, and there is no dioxin produced from its manufacture.
As an alternative to cotton — The most commonly seen modern hemp product is clothing. Hemp clothing is warmer, softer, more absorbent, extremely breathable and significantly longer lasting than clothing made from cotton. It is nice to have clothing that looks like linen, feels like flannel, and wears two to three times longer than other fabrics. Growing hemp is also much easier on the environment than growing cotton.
